講義概要・到達目標

【Course outline】
The humanity, since the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, has been seeking prosperity through realizing modern industrial society. The industrialization processes was accompanied by the massive increase of energy and material consumption. Civilizations depending on fossil fuels have brought prosperity generally, yet they have also triggered immense environmental degradation. The COVID-19 has painfully told us that the current situation is totally unsustainable. Thus, we, in the 21st century, are now at the critical crossroads, as testified by Ms. Greta Thunberg, a teenage climate activist. There has been a growing recognition in which conventional understanding and policies would no longer resolve current trilemma of ecology, economy, and equity. So what can we (and should) do now ? Based on my practical experiences as a former UNDP staff, this course is to explore the complex realities of our time by bringing recent research results. It also aims to mesh global and local dimensions.

【Attainment objectives】
Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to 1) understand the critical situation of our planet; 2) understand diverse perspectives related to a wide range of sustainability issues and themes; and 3) organize practical local actions that relates to global problems.
